How To Start Working Out Again When It’s Been Awhile

We’ve all been there before. Maybe vacation, sickness, busyness of life, or even just a season where you don’t quite feel motivated has kept you from making it to the gym on a consistent basis. After a few weeks off from your workout routine, it may feel as though you are just getting started all over again. In reality, you likely have lost very little fitness but instead simply gotten out of the habit of exercising each day. Here are a few quick tips to help you get back on track and rebuild your exercise habit.

  1. Start slow. There’s no need to attempt to crush yourself on day one returning to the gym after a long break. In reality, this will likely set you back and make it even more difficult for you to show up the next day and begin to reestablish your exercise habit. Simply set a goal of moving your body with no expectations on your performance. Showing up, getting a good sweat, and leaving happy is your number 1 goal. For Townie members, this may mean going down a few levels for your workout and slowly building back up to your previous fitness level over the coming weeks and months.
  2. Just show up! If you’ve been out of the gym for a season, the most important part of your long term success is just rebuilding your habit of showing up. Schedule a class, put on your tennis shoes, drive to the gym and show up. You don’t even have to workout. Say hi to your friends the first day, or maybe just hop on a rower for 30 min. Tomorrow, you can ease back into the programmed workout for the day, but the first thing you need to do is just show up. Just building time for exercise back into your schedule is going to help you get back into your routine of working out. If it’s your first day back after some time off, simply talk to your coach about how you’re feeling and they will be happy to prescribe the best option for you.
  3. Buy some new workout clothes. This one may seem silly, but if you upgrade your workout wardrobe then you likely will be more motivated to show up to the gym. So head over to our friends at Active Soles, get some new kicks, and break them in with your friends at the gym.
  4. Schedule a check in with a coach. We want to talk to you! If you’re struggling getting back into the gym we are here to help you. Book a time to talk to your coach and we can come up with a plan specifically for you to help you get back on track with your goals, encourage you, and also help hold you accountable. A couple personal training sessions can be a great way to get some one on one guidance and accountability to help you get back into the gym and build up your confidence.

If you have been out of the gym for a bit, it’s unlikely you have lost very much fitness but instead simply gotten out of the habit of exercising. If this is you, book a FREE INTRO and we will help you get back on track. If you are a current client, book a check in to meet with a coach. The best time to start back was yesterday.
