September Athlete of the Month: Randy

At CrossFit Townie, Athlete of the Month isn’t about who lifts the most weight or finishes the workout the fastest. It’s about consistency, character, community, and the way someone approaches their own fitness journey.

Our September Athlete of the Month, Randy, is a perfect example of all of those things.

His favorite CrossFit quote says a lot about his approach:

“Scaled for Life.”

Randy began CrossFit 15 years ago, long before moving to Thomasville. But after suffering an injury several years ago, he began to wonder if his CrossFit days were behind him.

“I thought that I had simply aged past CrossFit,” he said.

Thankfully, that wasn’t the end of his story.

Randy joined CrossFit Townie about two and a half years ago and found a way to continue doing something he had loved for years,. even if it looked a little different than it once did.

Instead of focusing on what he can’t or shouldn’t do, Randy focuses on finding the version of the workout that works for him.

His goal every day is simple:

Be able to come back the next day.

And as Randy proudly puts it, he always has.

Sometimes that means scaling the weight. Sometimes it means modifying a movement. But it has never meant that his workout matters any less.

That mindset is something we want every person who walks through our doors to understand. CrossFit is not reserved for the youngest, strongest, or fastest athlete in the room. Fitness can, and should, change with us through different seasons of life.

Different Journeys, Same Finish Line

When we asked Randy about a moment at Townie that stands out to him, he shared a story from Murph this year that perfectly represents the community we want to build.

Randy completed a scaled version of Murph, while Joleen Eloff took on the workout RX.

As Joleen worked through the final portion of the workout and fatigue began to set in, Randy and Tom Harrison jumped in alongside her. They stayed with her and cheered her on as she made her way to the finish.

Randy described it as a wonderful feeling of camaraderie.

Each of them had their own workout and their own journey that day, but when one person needed a little extra push to reach the finish, the others were there.

That’s CrossFit Townie.

You don’t have to use the same weight.

You don’t have to perform the same movements.

You don’t even have to take the same path.

You just keep showing up, doing what you can today, and supporting the people beside you as they do the same.

Scaled for Life

Randy’s story is also an important reminder that getting older or having an injury in your past doesn’t automatically mean giving up the things you love.

Sometimes the goal changes.

Maybe today isn’t about setting a PR. Maybe it’s about moving well, staying strong, maintaining independence, enjoying your community, and being able to come back and do it again tomorrow.

For Randy, that philosophy has allowed CrossFit to remain part of his life 15 years after he first started.

We’re grateful that the last two and a half of those years have been spent with us at CrossFit Townie.

Randy, thank you for the consistency you bring, the encouragement you give to others, and the example you set by continuing to show up and make fitness work for you.

We are proud to recognize you as our September Athlete of the Month!

And yes, we’ll keep the Metallica coming. 🤘
